Location--

South Africa is located, you guessed it, farthest south of Africa and is surrounded by the Indian and South Atlantic Ocean.  Surrounding South Africa's upper region is Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Swaziland.  Located right in the middle is also Lesotho, which is completely surrounded by South Africa.  South Africa is relatively isolated from other continents.  To the left you would need to cross the Atlantic Ocean to reach South America and to the right you would need to cross the Indian ocean to get to Australia.

Size-- How Large is South Africa?

South Africa is 1,219,090 sq. km. and roughly 1/8th the size of the US or a little less than two times the size of Texas

Terrain--

South Africa has a middle area of relatively high land surrounded by rugged hills extending into flat low lying . land that extends to the sea.

  1. Great, lots of useful details about the geography. There are so many countries in Africa that we don't learn about here in the US. I feel that South Africa is more well known, and it is the farthest south of all the African nations. It's not as large as I thought being only 1/8 the size of the US. However, almost twice the size of Texas is nothing to sneeze at. (Dr. G)
